Workplace Violence – Strategies to Avoid a Nightmare Event

Summary of Session

Contrary to popular belief, most acts of workplace violence can be prevented if people know why these events occur, what to look for, and how to act on that awareness.

When it comes to any workplace’s worst nightmares, workplace violence is right up there at the top of the list. Workplace Violence can take many forms and whether it is the horror of a mass shooting, an employee or client/customer involved assault, employees being bullied, or intimidated; the impact can go far beyond what happens to an individual victim.

Employers may experience substantial economic damage from lost work time, decreased employee morale and productivity, increased use of leave, workers compensation costs, medical expenses, possible lawsuits, and related costs; as well as exodus of employees due to emotional distress. Add to that loss of employee trust, labor/management issues, and damage to company reputation; even a seemingly minor event can have a profoundly negative impact on your organization.

Employees have a right to a workplace free of fear of harm; and employees who feel safe are more engaged, more productive, and less likely to leave.

This session will be customized to the audience, with employee sessions focused on how to participate in the creation of a safer workplace, recognize warning signs and what to do to reduce the risk of violent acts, what to do when concerns arise, and what to do if an event does occur.

Sessions for leaders and employers will add information on regulatory and best practices awareness, and actionable strategies that can be instituted to reduce the risk of workplace violence occurring;

Workplace Application

Employers have legal and ethical obligations to promote a work environment free from threats and violence, and to protect the business from economic loss and damage to company viability. Employees, when empowered with knowledge can partner with management to reduce the risk of an event occurring and minimize the harm if an event does occur.
